ST. LOUIS (AP) - A three-day state hearing on Ameren Missouri’s planned coal ash landfill in Franklin County starts Monday in Jefferson City.

The Missouri Public Service Commission’s consideration of the proposed landfill next to the Labadie power plant is one of Ameren’s final remaining regulatory hurdles.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the commission and the state’s Office of Public Counsel support the Ameren plan. A decision could be announced as soon as May.

Environmental groups fighting the project cite its potential to contaminate groundwater and its location in the Missouri River floodway.

Ameren also needs a construction permit from the state Department of Natural Resources, which is hosting an April 8 public hearing in Washington.
