UNION, Mo. (AP) – With threats against law enforcement on the increase, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department in eastern Missouri is installing a bulletproof security window in its lobby.

The Washington Missourian reports the county commission recently approved a bid of about $25,000 for the project to install a window barrier between the public and employees at the sheriff’s headquarters in Union. Once the project is finished, the public will speak to a clerk through a window before gaining access.

Sheriff Gary Toelke says that since the unrest in Ferguson last year, threats against law enforcement in the region have increased significantly. He also cited reports that ISIS is recruiting people to kill police. And, Toelke says, there are always people mad at officers, and their threats should not be taken lightly.
