FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOX) - There’s still a large timber wolf running free in Franklin County.
But, until last night there had been two.
Sheriff Gary Toelke says the two wolves recently escaped from a cage in Robertsville.
But one of them met a violent end Monday when a homeowner caught it skulking around inside his sheep pen, and he shot it dead.
KMOX News asked whether the remaining wolf, which weighs between 100 and 150 pounds, poses a threat to the public.
“It’s kind of hard to say,” Toelke says. “The owner said they were skittish, they weren’t very violent toward him, but once they get out into the wild, obviously they’re going to get hungry. They’re unpredictable; you don’t know what they’re gonna do.”
Sheriff Toelke says they’re asking residents to keep an eye out and contact his office if they see the remaining timber wolf.
They’ve also contacted a wolf sanctuary about the possibility of setting out snares.
