ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Environmentalists are expected to be out in force at a public hearing before the Public Service Commission over Ameren’s request to build a coal ash landfill.

Ameren wants to build the landfill in what environmentalists say is a Missouri River Floodplain at Labadie in Franklin County, near the company’s coal-fired power plant.

Ameren received permission to build the plant in 1966 and now wants to expand the plant boundaries to accommodate the landfill. Environmentalists say coal ash contains carcinogens and heavy metals linked to disease. They say the property is vulnerable to flooding that could carry contaminates into the Missouri River.

The public hearing is June 25th on the campus of East Central College in Union.
