FAA to Make Decision on St. Clair Airport

ST. CLAIR, Mo. - Flights in and out of a small municipal airport in Franklin County could soon be grounded—permanently.

The city of St. Clair’s fight to shut down its airports has been going on for years, and depends on a ruling from the Federal Aviation Administration that’s already been pushed back a half-dozen times.

St. Clair city administrator Rick Childers says the facility has only four tenants.

“The existing airport is too short to handle anything other than personal recreational aircrafts, and it’s too close to Interstate 44,” he says.

A better idea, he says, is to shutter the St. Clair airport and make way for more profitable retail developments, with airports in nearby Sullivan and Washington taking up the slack.

Today is the latest due date for a decision from the FAA that could clear the way for the shutdown.
